I don't think the OS is his problem. He has some type of hardware issue that will need to be taken care of first.

I looked at the screen and it look like a virus to me. we can try to pull out stuff and see might be the ram or the hd has gone bad. not sure

He booted with the XP boot disk and it loaded really really slow and then it would error out after he hit F8 for the license agreement

right I was standing right behind the nub LOL. but if that is the case why would th license have any thing to do with hardwear. that is softwear. that is why I was thinkign of a virus. plus his comment about not being able to open stuff on his desk top. sound like worm to me.
