what's the current video card to get?

I remember hearing something about a Radeon 9600 Pro being overclockable (hackable) to 9800 (or maybe 9700) performance.

It was the 9500 to a 9700...but, you have to get the right card (very hard to do) and you might have some artifects anyway. You need to look for the ATI 9500 that had the memory in the L shape on the card. There are also 4 capacitors that are in a + shape to the top left side of the GPU. Like I said, it's hard to find one of the cards now because so many people have gotten them already. The new ones won't work if you apply the soft fix.

That's what I mean, and it's 5 capacitors. Sorry...

Tech is correct but you can still overclock the 9600 to 9800 specs

Oh...didnt hear about that one. The fix for the 9500 wasn't an overclock. It was actually unlocking the other 4 pipelines like the 9700 had. Other than locking the 4 pipelines, the 2 cards were almost exactly the same. Same for 9600 to 9800 overclock? Or is it an actual overclock?
