Yeah Dirge...gotta love Pops :)
Basie had possibly the swinginest big band of the era - so far behind the beat they were practically dragging, yet perfectly in time, all the time. The currently touring Basie band is actually quite good as well, heard them several times.

My favs:
#1 Louis Armstrong and Jack Teagarden are tied for my #1 spot :-)

Bop:
Miles (bop, hard bop, acid, fusion, whatever...like early miles the bestest)
Diz
Coletrane
JJ Johnson
Bill Watrous
Art Farmer
Gerry Mulligan
Benny Golson
Slide Hampton
Robin Eubanks
Wynton and Branford Marsalis
Sonny Rollins
Clark Terry
Jayson Rowe =)

Cool Jazz:
Dave Brubek
Paul Desmond (Brubek's alto player - did a lot of solo work as well)
Joe Pass
Herb Ellis (bop crossover)
Chet Baker

Latin:
Dizzy's later stuff
Arturo Sandoval

Swing Era:
Basie
Ellington
Glen Miller
Tommy Dorsey
Benny Goodman
Harry James
Charlie Barnett
Artie Shaw
Ben Pollack

Big Band:
Kenton
Buddy Rich
Maynard Ferguson
Woody Herman
Gene Krupa
Doc Severinsen & the Tonight Show Band (REALLY Awesome band)
The Navy Commadores
The USAF Airmen of Note
The Army Blues - All the top military Jazz Bands are truly AWESOME, if you ever get a chance to hear them GO!
Florence Big Band =)

King Oliver
Jack Teagarden
Original Dixieland Jass Band

lol You have a very respectful knowledge of Jazz. But I think the one thing you're missing is the one thing we in New Orleans take for granted every day. You have no contemporary New Orleans Jazz musicians listed, and that is a shame. We will remedy that when you make it down here. Some local guys I was brain farting this morining on and couldn't remember... Any of the Marsalis clan, Jeremy Davenport, Irvin Mayfield (HOLY CRAP HES AWESOME ON THE TRUMPET), Newbirth Brass Band, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Soul Rebels, the list goes on and on..

For a taste of what a typical New Orleans friday holds, here a link to the Offbeat's music listing for New Orleans tonight:

w00t Did I mention the music down here is good?
