If you have a lot of diskspace to work with, might I suggest looking into a program that's still in its beta stages but will have its first release out soon? It's called Exact Audio Copy. Here's how it works.

So you have your CD and your copy of EAC. All this program does is rip the CD to wave format, but it has something called "secure mode." Basically, secure mode is the most advanced method of error correction in any ripper ever developed. It can do so much, that it can pull a great-sounding file off of even a badly scratched or dirty CD.

So that's great, but you wanted mp3s and not WAVs, right? Well, if you configure it correctly, you can use an other program that you've downloaded called LAME 3.92 to compress the WAV files to mp3 immediately after they're ripped. The great thing about this program is that it encodes the file in a variable bitrate. That is, each frame of the track has a quality based on its original quality and the overall mp3 quality you would like. For example, in my additional command line parameters, I've specified "--alt-present extreme." What that tells LAME is that I want these mp3s to be VBR with the best quality it can muster.

The result has been the best-sounding mp3s I have ever heard. Of course, you need a sub to truly appreciate the bass. :)

If you want to give it a try...

thanks, I don't get to spend much time with it, but once in a while I like to play around and get some songs off my old cd's.
