A Northwest Airlink regional jet crashed into a loading bridge at Memphis International Airport Tuesday afternoon, spilling 50 to 60 gallons of fuel.

There were no passengers aboard the aircraft, an AVRO-85, a 69-seat regional jet operated by Minneapolis-based Mesaba Airlines, said Larry Cox, president and chief executive officer of the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority.

Cox said the aircraft was returning to gate C2 after a maintenance check when it ran into the loading bridge, extensively damaging an engine and a wing.

"As It was explained to me, it (the loading bridge) was laying on the ground," said Cox. "So it (the plane) hit it pretty hard."

The C concourse was evacuated as a precaution because of the fuel leak. It has since reopened but the gates where the leak occurred were still closed early Tuesday afternoon.

Mesaba Airlines spokesman Dave Jackson said two mechanics were taxiing the aircraft back to the gate after completing diagnostic tests on the plane.

Jackson said the company’s investigation is ongoing to determine the cause for the crash. The plane will be out of service indefinitely, he said.

The Memphis Fire Department quickly worked to contain a spill of jet fuel that leaked from the plane, said Maggie Dabney, an MFD senior operator.

The mishap occurred at 12:24 p.m. after the plane had arrived at the airport, Dabney said.

Fire crews laid precautionary lines amid reports that the jet was smoking, but there apparently was no major blaze.

I guess they forgot how to use the brakes.

Weird, But I flew up to LaCrosse , Wisconsin for work in June, and made the Memphis /Minneapolis transfer on the way up, and on the way back. I was flying none other than Northwest Airlink, operated by Mesaba Airlines, and made the trip on an AVRO - 85 both ways. All of those planes operate out of the C concourse. Spooks me a little.
