You're going to need a program to make all the bitmaps into an avi, I strongly recommend Videomach http://www.videomach.com.
It is a very easy program to use. Once you have downloaded it, load Video Mach up.
Go to "File" "Open". Select all of bitmaps (from first to last) and click open. If none of them get imported, try selecting less at one time.
Once you have all of the bitmaps imported, you can go through and delete and move all the scenes you want.

Now that you have all of the bitmaps in the order you want, click on the little disk icon above the middle box.
First Create an output name, and select avi in the dropdown box (it might do that automatically though).
Then click on the video tab. Find the Frame Rate box, and unselect "automatic", then unselect "keep original duration".
I suggest using the fps you filled in using the command startmovie, this way you'll get the real speed,
you can use higher or lower fps to change the speed (slow motion, fast forward effects).
Now go to "Format Options". Choose DivX Codec 5.xx, and click configure.
Make sure you have DivX http://www.divx.com. In the upper left corner there's a dropdown box, "Variable Bitrate Mode"(under the nice picture :).
You can choose among these 3modes:

- 1pass is the choice to keep it very simple.
- 1pass quality based is best of you want to edit the movie later.
- 2pass is more complicated. You'll have to create the movie twice before this one works.

The first time you compile it choose "2pass 1st pass" and select the kbps (this will make an analyse, wont create the avi yet).
((800kbps > good quality) (150kbps > bad quality, not too bad).
The second time you compile it choose "2pass second pass" and create the avi again,
this will use the analysis from step 1 and it will create your avi.
In this mode, some parts of the avi will be less quality the other parts, depending on the movement in your avi.(this mode is most recommend for final compression).
For editing your avi, you should use an compression with almost no quality loss, I recommend Huffyuv http://math.berkeley.edu/~benrg/huffyuv.html,
Click OK, until you get back to the main interface of VideoMach.
Now click on the blue triangle right side of the blue disk, it will start to compile the bmp's into an avi.
Once that is done you have a playable avi movie.
(Attention!! If you have chosen the 2pass mode you'll have to do this twice, firs time with the "2pass 1st pass" then again with the "2pass Second pass".)

Adding music is very important and very easy, just import your music file like your imported bmp's (you can edit the music with simple tools like Cooledit http://www.cooledit.com).
You should choose the audio compression yourself and don't let Video Mach do it automatically or it will save the sound file as a huge *.wav !

There are different ways to record ingame sound, some soundcards have to option to record all output.
You can use a special cable wich redirects all the output to the input
And if you don't have all that stuf, you can always make the ingame sound yourself

You will consider yourself the b00n when you go look at the link I posted and compair it to my post.. a demo consist of many bitmaps sometimes called frames, you have to convert each of these bitmaps (frames) to avi format before you can make the actual avi. I only have one more thing to say.. :owned

theres no way to easily convert it, i wish there was, toby's right, you have to use a program to take constant screenshots of the demo, then use a program to put them together, you had to do it this way back in the quake days too, in my opinion it takes up to much time/harddrive space, unless someone else is doing it lol

That doesn't make the dems into readable files does it? I don't want to edit bit maps, i want to edit .dems, and convert them to another video format

How do you make .bmps, or image files out of the dem, so that video mach can read them?
