Time for some Metroid love...

First, a bit of info. They're dubbing the latest Metroid a first person adventure (FPA). Since a lot of Metroid involved exploring tunnels filled with critters, it actually lends itself quite well to the first-person perspective. However, there will still be an emphasis on exploration and puzzle solving. The camera will automatically zoom out to a third person view when Samus morphs into ball form.

The programmers seem to have really captured the classic Metroid environments - and have gone out of their way to make it seem like you are actually inside the bounty hunter's suit. First, there are multiple visor views (one for combat, targeting, scanning, etc). Each view provides feedback about the environement, enemies, and so on. Some of the cooler in-suit effects - splatter on the visor from the critter you just blew up, condensation from steam, and the reflection of Samus' face in the visor as the room lights up from an explosion.

Bottom line, this was one of the most talked about titles at E3, and it should be awesome!

As usual, pics for those that are interested...

the face one is hella kewl.
thats a new one.
i read that it was a dissappointing game though.
they kinda dubbed it an average FPS as of now.
but since its a ways from bein released hopefully Retro Studios will get in gear and make it own.
But metroid owns.

SAMUS, YOu r0x0R!

Disappointing? It's not even out yet! I would wait to pass judgement until we get a more complete look at the game - only one level was shown at E3. Besides, it was awarded "Best in Show" at E3 by many websites.

Metroid is all about moody environments, cool weapons and gadgets, and exploring. The first person view is just a new take on the series, but I don't think their intent is to be just another FPS. They are going all out to make you feel like you are inside Samus' suit of armor. I do fear a lot of the classic jumping-platforming elements will be lost, but it looks like they are going to emphasize the morph-ball even more. I've already seen footage of some magnetic tracks that allow you to move along walls, and some half-pipe type areas. There will be some new twists. This is Nintendo we're talking about...they won't release it until it oozes quality.

Metroid Fusion on the GBA
Everyone that owns a Game Boy Advance should be frothing with excitement over the new Metroid title - Metroid Fusion. It made a big impact at E3 2002, so be sure to stay tuned to GameSpy for more coverage from the in-session Nintendo Gamers Summit 2002 very soon.

I read a bit about Fusion and it looks sweet! Sounds like Super Metroid with a much more involved story line.

Nintendo announced yesterday that the game will also feature some sort of connectivity with Metroid Prime on the GC. No concrete details yet, hopefully it will be cool.

After waiting all these years, Metroid fans will be able to get two new Metroid games on the same day!

A few quick screenies of Fusion for the GBA. Super Metroid on the SNES was one of my all time favorites - so far this looks to be a worthy sequel...

While I did enjoy the first few Megaman titles (how many were there, I lost count), there is no way he owns Metroid. A worthy challenger to be sure, but Samus rules all.

And with that, the console forums will be rant-free until Labor Day as I fly out in the morning to drop a K-BOMB on sunny Hawaii. I can't believe I'm actually missing the launch of Mario on the GC, but my wife would kill me if I smuggled the GC on vacation :) Oh well, I've still got my GBA!

You boys behave yourselves. Dirge/Diesel, ya'll keep Vicious and Big Brother in line and defend the Cube's honor ;)

Aloha...

megaman is good and all, but nothin compares to scope and vastness of Metroid.

Aloha...I'm back.

Vicious, give Mario a break. He is, after all, probably the main reason the video game market survived in the 80's. When Atari was dying, Nintendo and Super Mario Bros. gave new life to a failing industry. Regardless of where your present-day console allegiance may rest, almost everyone has enjoyed a Mario game at some point. He has always been, and remains to this day, the KING of platformers. The new game is no different. It takes everything that was great about SM64 and adds a twist with the water pack. It's not a minor twist either. The pack is not just used to spray water and clean up goop. It's a jet pack, a gun, a rocket launcher, a hovercraft, etc. What appears to be a simple device has added a whole new angle on the already tight gameplay.

If you don't like platformers, that's cool. Or if you just insist that a game must have blood or violence to be good, well, you're entitled to your opinion. But I would hesitate to simply dismiss a game because it "looks" gay. The game is FUN. In classic Nintendo fashion, it's accessible enough for gamers of all ages and experience levels to get into, but to actually discover all the secrets and fully complete the game will be VERY challenging.

Oh yeah, to answer dA nYc pIMp,

I believe at the end of the Metroid on the NES and Super Metroid on the SNES, you got to see Samus without armor if you completed the game with a high enough ranking. I wouldn't be surprised to see this trend continue...

FYI, some info has been released regarding the Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion connection. If you complete Metroid Fusion on the GBA, then link up with Prime on the GC, you can unlock the original Metroid on the GC. Also, if you beat Metroid Prime, you can upload the Samus' Fusion suit of armor into Prime.

Now if they would only include Super Metroid as unlockable, that would be hellasweet.
