Dr. Pepper merged with 7up in 1986 and both were subsequenhtly bought by Cadbury Schwepps in 1995 (the candy company). Dr. Pepper was first sold in 1885. They are distributed in some areas by Coke but not by Pepsi.

Also, I believe that Pepsi machines sell Mr. Pibb and Coke sells Dr. Pepper just so that there isn't a virtual monopoly in the establisment. Someone would have to check on the legality of my assumption, but, I think it is right.

Ever try drinking a rum and Pepsi or a bourbon and Pepsi. It just doesn't work. I remember the first Mardi Gras when Rite Aid bought out K&B. Rite Aid didn't sell Coke. But amazingly enough, by the next Mardi Gras there was Coke on the shelves. The power of the consumer!!

BTW, Dr. Pepper is an independent company, and who it is distributed by varies. Except Pepsi seems to have the fountain rights, which is why McDonalds has Mr. Pibb but Taco Bell has Dr. Pepper. On the coast where I live, it is a Coke product. But in Hattiesburg, it is a Pepsi product.
