I saw what Wetz got from newegg....how is that working out for you?

I was looking at a similar price range and found this:

I use a similar laptop for work and it seems to fine...I have never purchased a laptop before so I am new to this side of things...work just gives me one for FREE!

This is mainly for my wife and I, she wants to start getting into photo editing (recently got a new Nikon) and I am still holding out hope that I can one day play some games again. We may start using web cam to talk to relatives up in Canada as well. Other than that....surfing the web and checking email is what it will be used for.

If all you will be doing is surfing, go cheap. However the more things you do like photo editing and game will increase what you need in the way of memory and processor. You also my want to think about upgrades.. Can it be done? Memory on laptops is relatively. Easy to swap but some components are extremely difficult.

Just my $.02

All graphics are onboard with laptops. I think the run of the mill digital Intel chipset will run just fine even when editing photos. If you go with Vista make sure it is Vista Ultimate. You will be happy. Also make sure you order 4 gigs of RAM right away (make sure the laptop can handle 4 gigs total). You also want a Core 2 duo intel over a dual core. Better technology. Video anything...integrated 1.3 megapixel webcam is the minimum. My .o2.

I saw a pimp Toshiba Special Edition a guy bought at Best Buy for $899. More than enough for what you will do, and sweet case graphics. I set it up for his daughter.

I just checked out the link. I would go with the Toshiba and take her out for Dinner. Nevermind that. With the money saved you can upgrade the Vista to Ultimate 64 bit. Also, almost 2 lbs lighter. You do sacrifice some screen size, but I loath 17" Laptops. Why wouldn't ya just buy a desktop?

Check out the differences between Home Prem. and Ultimate. The First one is HUGE!

I guess i just like the big screen with the convenience of moving your pc around the house. 17" screen is not a 'must have' though.

that toshiba looks pretty good, does the brand of laptops mean anything these days? or is just user preference mostly?
