Ok here are the specs on my laptop, BF2 loads fine, then as soon as I select a server to join it won't connect, doesn't show the players names in the make and the ping spikes.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Are you running the program as "Administrator"?

If it won't connect, Have you tried to turn of the security measures. "UAC", Firewall, Windows Defender, Norton or McAfee?

Have you tried to run a local game versus an internet server?

Single player works fine... run as admin, turned off the firewall, still wont connect to a server. This is a stupid question, but what about the actual cable I use to it my Linksys router, its not one of those blue cables but a 30awg/4p UTP 350 mhz category 5e...

Thanks guys...

Given wireless g speeds, you should be able to play fine with the WLan connection. Disconnect the cable and try it with wireless only (or turn off the wireless and use the cable only). It still sounds like a firewall issue, but that's tough to diagnose in a forum.

FWIW, I've used both 32bit and 64bit versions of Vista (with the firewall and defender on) and haven't had any issues.

I have seen something similar before, single player was perfect. but in internet games it would let you join the server, but after 5 or so seconds of play you would get disconnected and the server says 'lost connection...' Has this happened?

Ok this has something to do with dual core processors. It doesnt happen to everyone, but there are several cases of this. just google "bf2 dual core affinity" and you'll see. AMD came out with a fix for it, but i havent seen one for Intel. There may be one out there.

The workaround is this:

1. Start BF2
2. Once the game is up, alt tab out and bring up your task manager.
3. Click the Processes tab.
4. Find 'bf2.exe' and right-click it, and click 'Set Affinity'
5. Uncheck one of the cpu's and click ok
6. alt-tab back to bf2 and you should be able to join servers and play fine.

It sucks having to do that all the time, and there may be a more 'permanent' fix out there. I'll look around.
Have you installed SP1 for vista or ran any updates yet?

Ok when I get there it says: UNABLE TO SET AFFINITY PROCESSES... STOP.

I'd also bypass the router just to make sure it is not the issue since the game does work locally but not online.

I have the Laptop sitting right here connected to the same router my Gaming rig is connected to (Which works fine) I've up dated Vista with SP1, and will update the patch (just in case) and the PB. It feels like it's my Laptop which has the connection issue, something is not quite right, thanks for the help and please bear with me....

Windows firewall enabled? Did you open ports on the router specifcally to your gaming rig?

Did you turn the UAC off on the Vista machine? I would. UAC, or User Account Control, is the annoying go to black screen for every freaking thing program.

Or option #2:

Close the lid....
Slide it over to the right 3 ft.....
Turn to gaming rig......
Frag the shiot out of Goose.

I'm going to take the laptop and connect it to my Game Rig and see what it does... THIS IS BS! lol
