Maximum RAM

The maximum RAM u can have for XP is 3Gb? I was told this by the tech support for my new computer. He said that windows will only recognize 3 gb worth of ram. Most of the places I've looked online seem to confirm this.

Actually I was told in can really only use 2 Gb but will see 3 plus. That's why I ony have 2Gb

XP sp2 will recognize 4 gigs for ram but only report 3.5 if you looked in the system properties.

I just had my problems w/ 3GB of ram - I dunno if it was my mobo or my ram, but I had ordered 2 1gb sticks of ddr2 to add too my 2 512's i had, and sometimes windows would see 3gb's, sometimes 1gb :(

Anyway - being impatient, I went ahead and sent my ram back to newegg, and went to best buy and bought 2 512 to put in giving me 2 gb total, and I've had no problems since...

Toby's right. however, the 64bit version of windows allows you to have up to 8 gb of ram.

Ok, well, I wanted to make sure b/c I have 4 gb of ram but when I put it all in it only reports 3 gbs under system properties. I wanted to make sure it wasn't something wrong with my computer.
