Hey guys, I have the envious task of cleaning up an acquaintance's Windows 98 box. Yeah! I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions or experience about spyware cleaning, registry cleaning, etc (anything to make the crappy machine run any better)

And before you ask, no the box can't be upgraded to XP.

The best way to fix windows 98...F&RI. Short of that, MSCONFIG and remove everything that you can. Ad-Aware won't work in 98?

I've always had luck with Mean Green and a scrub brush. Did they drop that machine in mudd or something?

plan b is windows 2000 pro... we have a copy on the ftp server.. i've been putin it on some old rigs at work that are infected with the dreaded winblows 98.. We are giving them away... Most of them are PII but some are slower even.. I can't see win 2000 being a prob.. And the one on the ftp server is a newer version...

dirge,

1st get all critical updates
2. get adaware and update it
3. dump IE cache
4. start--run--%temp% (delete everything in the folder)
5. start--run--msconfig (uncheck everything except explorer and systray)
6. goto control panel, delete any adware you see in there and can identify
7. reboot and go into safe mode
8. run adaware until its clean

I also use regclean and regcleaner, run them both:

http://monitor.willstaff.net/monitor/files/regcleaner/RegClean.exe
http://monitor.willstaff.net/monitor/files/regcleaner/RegCleaner.exe

That usually does it for me

Also microsoft just came out with their spyware software, its in beta, but it works pretty good:
